  • After graduation, international students can benefit from the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program to gain experience that could lead to further employment opportunities or permanent residency.
  • Eligible to apply for permanent residence under the Canadian Experience Class program after one year of work experience in Canada.

Who needs a Study Permit?

In Canada, most foreign nationals need to apply for a study permit if they plan to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) if the duration of study is more than six months. Even if your initial program is less than six months but you might extend your studies or switch to another program that in total lasts more than six months, it’s advisable to apply for a study permit from the beginning.

In certain cases, one may be exempt from study permit requirements. For example, if you are enrolled in a program that lasts less than six months and will complete it within the period of your stay as allowed upon entering Canada, you do not need a study permit and for minor children already in Canada (does not apply to minor children moving to Canada for the purpose of studying and whose parents are not already in Canada or are not exempted will require a study permit). It is advisable to discuss your situation with a Registered Immigration Consultant.
