On June 3, 2024, in Toronto, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, announced new pilot programs to support caregivers and Canadian families. As the Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot end this month, these new, enhanced pilots will continue to allow caregivers to come to Canada and aim to make these programs permanent.
The new pilot programs will offer caregivers permanent residence (PR) upon arrival in Canada. They will also be permitted to work for organizations providing temporary or part-time care for semi-independent individuals or those recovering from injuries or illnesses. This change will help caregivers find suitable work with reliable employers and provide straightforward access to PR status upon arrival.
Eligibility for these new programs requires candidates to:
- Achieve a minimum level 4 on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB)
- Hold the equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma
- Have recent and relevant work experience
- Receive a full-time home care job offer
These PR on arrival pilot programs represent a significant advancement in meeting Canada’s evolving home care needs. More detailed information, including full eligibility criteria and application procedures, will be available before the pilots are fully launched.
